Water Baths, Circulators & Chillers
- Circulating water baths: Circulating baths are ideal for applications where temperature uniformity and consistency are critical, such as serological and enzymatic experiments. The water is thoroughly circulated throughout the bath, resulting in a more uniform temperature.
- Non-displacement water baths: This type of water bath relies primarily on convection rather than water that is evenly heated. Therefore, it is less precise in terms of temperature control. Additionally, there are add-ons that provide agitation to non-circulating water baths to create more uniform heat transfer.
Types of Water Baths that a Laboratory may need
Heating Bath Circulator
Water baths are a very common element in any type of microbiological laboratory. This type of equipment is a container that is capable of holding hot water to incubate samples in water at a constant temperature for a long period of time.
- PID Temperature Control
- Over temperature alarm
- low water level alarm
- internal and external circulation optional
- Tank is made of 304 stainless steel
Oil Bath
Oil baths are essentially the same as water baths with the difference that some oil is used instead of water. They are suitable when the temperatures to be reached exceed 100 ° C. For these baths it is important to use very thick-walled beakers to contain the oil.
Because oils have a high heat capacity and heat slowly, it may be helpful to partially heat the bath oil while the experiment is being set up.

Water Baths in operation
Before starting to use the water bath, it should be checked that it is clean and that the accessories to be used are installed. And then, you usually proceed with the following steps:
- Fill the bath with the water to be used to keep the temperature uniform. Verify that, once the containers to be heated are placed, the level of the tank is between 4 and 5 cm from the top edge of the tank.
- Install control instruments, such as thermometers and shakers, when required. Check the position of the bulb of the thermometer or the heat probe, to ensure that the readings are correct.
- Check that the water being used is highly clean.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
