Infant Bilirubin Phototherapy Unit

Phototherapy is a therapeutic measure in which light is used, specifically ultraviolet (UV) light because UV radiation has anti-inflammatory action, for the treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic dermatological diseases of the skin. The use of phototherapy dates from the beginning of the 20th century and from there several modalities have emerged, the most commonly used being UVA (340-400 nm), PUVA (Psoralen + UVA), UVB broadband (280-320 nm) and the most recent narrowband UVB (311 nm).

It is a technique that is commonly indicated in extensive forms, in which the application of a topical treatment is insufficient. It is frequently used in pathologies such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, mycosis fungoides and vitiligo. The mechanism of action of phototherapy is complex, based on the combined action of epidermal proliferation inhibition, an anti-inflammatory effect, and several immunomodulatory actions.
