Using the Microplate Reader for HIV Testing

A microplate reader is a device that involves different modes of activity and is widely used in the area of research and medicine for the detection of chemical, biological or physical abnormalities of a sample. This instrument allows to perform a wide variety of experiments simultaneously, among its main functions are, to make measurements of fluorescence, absorbance and luminescence. The ELISA technique requires a microplate reader to detect and diagnose diseases such as hepatitis B, cancer, Covid-19, and HIV, among others.

The human immunodeficiency virus, known by its acronym as HIV, is a disease that destroys the immune system by damaging a type of white blood cell called CD4 lymphocytes, which is responsible for fighting infections. Various tests can help determine this disorder, including the ELISA test, which is done with the help of a microplate reader. People with HIV infection produce an antigen called p24, even long before antibodies are generated.

Microplate reader for HIV detection

A microplate reader is accompanied by essential detection instruments, these are microplates, which are a kind of gradilla containing multiple microwells in the form of tubes, where they fit about 200 to 300 microliters. The sample is deposited in these wells and analyzed using the ELISA test, which is a test for antigens in the blood. This laboratory test is used to diagnose diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and immune diseases such as HIV.

HIV is an infectious disease that affects and weakens the immune system, once it has been weakened by the virus, the body’s defenses give way to the appearance of certain diseases. HIV can be diagnosed by the ELISA test, with the help of the microplate reader. Through its optical system, it generates fibers that give light to the wells of the microplate where the samples are contained. The light emitted passes through the sample, then is amplified and finally the absorbance is determined.

Microplate Reader

The microplate reader is an instrument that allows the detection of physical, biological or chemical phenomena of a sample contained in the titration plates. These plates, are rectangular with dimensions of 12.5 cm by 8.5 cm, and are formed by 8 rows and 12 columns, which have 96 small wells in the form of U, V or planes. The columns refer to an absorbance value for different wavelengths, there are also models in which the columns are used to calibrate the wavelength scale, in these cases, they have a holmium oxide filter with absorbance peaks.

The microplate reader is used to read the results of tests performed by the ELISA technique, said technique, is applied in serology and immunology, allowing to discover antibodies or antigens in the body of an infectious agent, an example of this agent is HIV infection. A microboard reader can minimize and save cost and operating time, allowing users to spend more time analyzing data.
