Use of the Oxygen Meter for a Dairy Company

The use of oxygen meters is currently essential to speed up quality testing in the dairy sectors, as it makes it possible to monitor the means of obtaining fresh milk without contamination and therefore vigorous dairy products.

It should be noted that oxygen meters are equipment that are designed to calculate the levels of oxygen present in any substance, and the determination of the degrees of oxidation in water. In this sense, in the dairy industry, the use of oxygen meters is of great importance, since it studies water pollution and changes in quality parameters in the discharge of consumers.

Testing Dairy Products with the Oxygen Meter

For the dairy industry, residues and pollutants are produced during the cheese, cream and butter manufacturing processes. Therefore, the variety of methods they apply for the production of products, causes waste water to obtain very different characteristics, since within the processes suffer considerable alterations and the total amount of spent water can stand out before the amount of milk treated.

That is why the physicochemical measures to monitor waste water discharges from activities related to the manufacture of food products, oxygen meters are used to measure the quality of water and wastewater.

It should be noted that this type of equipment is one of the best on the market and Kalstein has it, because thanks to its innovative design it is used as a reference to eliminate errors that occur during the manufacture of all milk derivatives, taking water as the main material. Thanks to the salinity compensations and the barometric pressure that the equipment has, it is able to eliminate measurement errors.

Determination of the Waters

Given the representation of solids in milk, the waters originating from the dairy processing bases may contain organic residues causing a disproportionate biological demand for oxygen. In other words, it can be evidenced that in the industrial sectors changes arise with respect to water quality due to the processes accomplished during dairy production.  So, if discharged sewage is being contaminated, it is of the utmost importance that these errors are corrected to avoid irreparable damage. And to analyze the water dislodged in the spaces, oxygen meters are used through a sample from the process lines such as fresh cheese, yogurt, milk, etc., to establish the corrective actions by measuring principles, such as:

  • Membrane Method: It is originated by electrochemical principles where the sample is separated to the platinum cathode, silver anode and electrolyte from the outside. Oxygen is transmitted through the membrane in equal volume to the partial pressure, when it passes through and reaches the cavity, it is minimized in the cathode, causing a flow proportional to the amount of dissolved oxygen.
  • Fluorescence: A probe with built-in fluorescent light is used to produce a shade of blue that illuminates the layer and emits red light after it is stimulated. This occurs when oxygen particles remove all kinds of extinction energy, time and intensity and relate to the particles present, causing the intensity of fluorescence.
