Features and applications of colorimeters

Colorimeters are instruments used to measure and analyze colors. Specialized color measurement equipment, using “tristimulus” measurements based on the passage of light through the three primary filters, red, green and blue, simulates the way the human eye is sensitive to light. These three-stimulus color measurements provide information about the amount of these three components present in light reflected or transmitted by a product or material.

They are very affordable price devices compared to other equipment, are compact in size, wide mobility and simple operation, which allow to carry unique actions such as: simple identification of color, comparison of colors and similar shades, measurement of color intensity, measurement of color solidity, color quality control, reference source to determine color standards, and evaluation of lots of non-metameric colors.

Characteristics of colorimeters

Colorimeters are sophisticated equipment that offer very precise results on the intensity and hue of a color, having as a common characteristic in all models the presence of a lamp that projects a ray of light on a particular object. These teams work by determining the color as a function of the red, blue and green components of the light absorbed by the sample object or the amount received by the human eye, when it makes impact from the equipment, when the light hits the sample, part of the light is absorbed, which causes a decrease in the amount of light reflected by the sample.

The main function of colorimeters is to determine the quantitative and qualitative measures of colors, such as saturation, hues and luminosity, as well as perception, quantity and depth, based primarily on the law of light absorption “Lambert-Leer”. In these equipment, the radiant energy of the light source is incident to the object, the reflected radiant power passes through one of the three tristimulus filters and falls on the photodetector, generating a response proportional to the corresponding tristimulus value of the object-source combination; subsequently, these raw data are transferred to a microprocessor for the calculation of the absolute tristimulus values.

Applications of colorimeters

There are a wide variety of applications in which colorimeters are used and are mentioned below. These kits are used by hospitals and laboratories to test biochemical samples such as urine, biologic fluids, plasma, and serum. Because colorimeters allow a person’s color perception to be computed, they are commonly used in research and development environments to help design electronic equipment, including phones, TVs, tablets, monitors and computers.  They can also be used as color meters to analyze chemicals that have chromophores.

Studies in fields such as pharmaceuticals and histology can benefit from color quantification to properly measure their study samples. Colorimeters can also be used in quality control for production lines or food. They can also be used by companies manufacturing toys, textiles, paint and other products to ensure that colors are maintained during the production process. Currently colorimeters are widely used in the graphic and digital printing industries.
